Broadband in rural areas in Sollefteå municipality
Sweden's goal is that 90% of the population should have access to broadband services of at least 100 Mbit by 2020. Sollefteå municipality has adopted this task and is working according to the Swedish model for financing broadband expansion.
About the project
The project, which targets the rural areas in Sollefteå municipality, i.e., locations with fewer than 200 inhabitants, aims to facilitate broadband expansion in areas that have not had the opportunity to build out broadband previously. The goal is that 1,000 new households after the project's completion will have access to fiber broadband. Sollefteå municipality will handle the complex establishment with planning and expansion of a secure infrastructure for modern infrastructure while a significant effort will be made by residents in the countryside.
The project uses the Swedish model, which is unique in Europe. This is because associations, private individuals, villages, and the public sector collaborate. A project manager from the municipality will work on initiation, planning, and establishment. In addition, volunteer contact persons will be appointed in each village responsible for organizing information meetings, collecting expressions of interest, and supporting the municipality throughout the project with, for example, knowledge about land ownership, collection of agreements, etc.
Planned activities are to create engagement for broadband expansion, support with knowledge and advice in the planning and construction phase, coordinate the work between the villages.
In the long term, Sollefteå municipality wants to contribute to the development of Sollefteå's countryside through the project, so that people can live, thrive, and work in the municipality and so that businesses can operate in the countryside.
