Entrance to the mountain forest

The project aims to make Nätra mountain forest accessible as a visitor area both in summer and winter.

Entrance Fjällskog – a boost for accessibility and outdoor life in Nätra fjällskog

With support from Leader Höga Kusten, Bygdsam Nätradalen has carried out the project Entrance to the mountain forest, aimed at improving accessibility, service, and experience value in Nätra fjällskog – a popular nature area in Örnsköldsvik municipality. The project is now completed and has resulted in several concrete improvements for both visitors and the local population.

Two wind shelters have been built, one of which serves as a service house with a toilet. Both constructions are completed and have passed final inspection. The area has also received a new parking lot, reinforced road to the starting point, a road barrier to limit car traffic, and an outdoor toilet. Additionally, a new route for the ski trail has been made possible and has been in use since the previous winter season.

An important part of the project has been to improve orientation in the area. A new signage plan has been developed in collaboration with the municipality, which has led to approximately 150 directional signs being installed at 35–40 locations. The Nätra River forest has also stepped in and financed signs at the three main entrances.

The project has been conducted in close collaboration with local associations, businesses, and the municipality. The voluntary effort has been extensive and included everything from planning and meetings to clearing work. Long-term operation is secured through continued cooperation with the municipality, associations in the area, and a newly established maintenance fund.

The project has led to new collaborations, increased tourism even during the summer months, and a growing interest in Nätra fjällskog as a year-round destination. Nature guides have started to use the area more actively, and discussions are ongoing about reviving traditional forms of use such as summer grazing.

Entrance to the mountain forest is an example of how local forces and collaboration can create lasting value for both place and people.
